Comprehension Questions

Comprehension questions (CQ) have been developed for the four stories included in the SALT Narrative Story Retell database. These questions, based on Bloom's taxonomy, were developed by Mary-Beth Rolland and several of her colleagues at the Madison Metropolitan School District. There are three questions in each of six categories: remember, understand, apply, analyze, evaluate, and create. The scores for the CQ are inserted plus lines in the transcript, typically at the end. A score of 0, 1, or 2 is assigned for each of the eighteen questions and is entered at the end of the appropriate plus line. SALT software contains options to facilitate inserting the scoring template and summarizing the results.

Click here for a description of the protocol and selected questions from each category. The Story Retell Elicitation Kit contains the laminated protocol and four 25-sheet scoring pads, one pad for each story.  You can also purchase the protocol and pads separately.

Note that the samples in the SALT Narrative Story Retell database were not scored for comprehension so no performance comparison can be made.
