SALT-NZAU 16 Clinical Software

SALT-NZAU is clinical software for assessing language acquisition and disorders through the use of language samples. The software includes a transcription editor, standard reports, and reference databases for age-matched comparisons. This is a customized version for our New Zealand and Australian customers. The dd/mm/yyyy date format is used and the New Zealand reference databases are selected by default. SALT-NZAU is a result of a long-term collaboration with Gail Gillon and Marleen Westerveld from the Department of Communication Disorders at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand.

SALT-NZAU for Windows® and Mac computers. SALT-NZAU was developed as Windows software. To provide a version of SALT-NZAU which runs on Mac computers, we partnered with CodeWeavers, Inc. Using Code Weavers' CrossOver software, SALT-NZAU for Windows is installed inside a virtual Windows environment. This version looks and runs a lot like any other Mac program although you may notice a slight delay when it starts up and you will notice a difference in the file system. But the best news is, there's no Windows license required; everything you need is included with the software.

A PDF copy of this book comes with the software. A printed copy of this book is available as a separate product.

What are the steps to using the software?

  1. Elicit a language sample: Although there are guidelines to follow when collecting a sample, there are no restrictions as to the sampling context, the number of speakers, or the length of the sample. Language samples are typically recorded, either audio only or audio/video. There is extensive help built into SALT, with suggestions for collecting language samples that are representative of the speaker's language and can be compared to age-matched peers selected from the SALT reference databases. The free online training has this and more, including video elicitation examples.

  2. Transcribe the language sample: Type the transcript into the computer using some type of controlled playback system and following the SALT transcript-entry conventions. An easy-to-use editor is included as part of the SALT software for typing in the transcript and checking it for transcript-entry errors. There is help built into SALT, with explanations of all the transcript-entry conventions. The free online training, however, is the place to go to learn how to transcribe.

  3. Calculate standard measures and compare to typical peers: Select from a variety of standard analyses. Compare your transcript to a database of normative language samples. An individual may be matched on age, grade, gender, sampling context, and transcript length. Matched records are selected from the database and mean, range, and standard deviation statistics are given for many of the analysis variables. There is help built into SALT with descriptions of all the reports and all the variables. The free online training contains several courses focusing on analysis.

The Clinical software license is for a single user. The software may either be installed on one shared computer, e.g., in a lab or shared office space, or on computer(s) used only by one person, e.g., home and office. If it is installed on a network, controls must be in place to restrict access to one user at a time.
